What does the Michigan Energy Code say about comfort, healthy
and energy efficiency
Are you concerned about raising
energy costs?
Is your quality of life being affected by asthma or allergies?
Does the possibility of mold scare you?
Does your home have wide variations in temperature?
Is your basement comfortable year around?
Is air leaking into your house through outlets/switches?
Big Icicles?
Did you know that all of these
issues can be controlled?
Read on to learn more about creating a COMFORTABLE/HEALTHY/ENERGY
EFFICIENT HOME?
There are many considerations to be aware of before building
a new home. With the rising Energy costs for heating and
cooling, home insulation is a primary consideration. The
Michigan Energy Code (MEC) has set the minimum
levels of insulation required for new home construction.
The specified levels of insulation in the MEC, however,
do not cover the necessary components required
to build a clean, comfortable and energy efficient home.
A common misconception that is explained in researching
the history of home building is that more insulation, (or
higher R-value) is better. The amount of home insulation
only represents part of the solution to having an energy
efficient home.
To create a healthy, energy efficient environment that
makes our living spaces comfortable, we must control air
infiltration, maintain humidity levels and exchange the
air in the home with fresh filtered air. These methods will
protect your family from Chemical and Biological contamination
that can cause health problems. They also significantly
reduce the possibility of mold growth, pet dander, radon
and dust mites.
ARE YOU PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY FROM THE CAUSES
OF POOR INDOOR AIR QUALITY?
Here are some valuable resources to assist you in gaining
the necessary knowledge to understand the issues involved
in creating an environment that is healthy, comfortable
and can reduce energy costs by up to 50%.

You can build a Healthy, Comfortable and
Energy Efficient Home!
It all begins with planning. We start by working in concert
with your builder to put a Heating, Air Conditioning and
Insulation package together.
Spray Foam Insulation is installed under floors, in external
framed walls and against roof. Through this process the
home is completely surrounded with an air barrier. The home
is tested with an infrared camera and blower door system.
These tests verify that the thermo envelope is airtight.
Conventional insulation materials like fiberglass and cellulose
do not perform as an air barrier.
The HVAC system is then "right sized" for your
home. Typically this system is 40-50% smaller than the package
used for a home with conventional insulation. The ductwork
is sized for specific volume of air to be delivered to each
room. An intelligent thermostat with humidity and multiple
temperature sensors is installed to monitor the entire system
which adjusts for changing conditions automatically. After
installation this system is balanced and tested to make
sure the performance is optimized.
You may think that a system like this sounds expensive.
In most cases the increase is 2-4% of the overall home price
in comparison to a MEC built home.
